Meta Tags & Site Verification

Meta tags are not visible to website visitors, but they are essential for external services such as search engines and social media platforms. They provide additional information about your page and help you control how it is presented on social media and search engines.

Most meta tags are self-explanatory. Some might require a brief explanation. We've outlined some key ones for you below.

  • As the name suggests, with Basic tags you offer basic information about your site. With Advanced tags you're able to fine-tune how your content is presented

Enter tags into corresponding fields to provide meta information. For example, you can provide your site title or description that show up when your page appears in the search results. Some fields are pre-filled with default options (inside the square brackets). These are tokens, you can replace them with corresponding content from your website.

    Basic Tags: fields

    • Page title
This is the text displayed in the title bar of a visitor’s web browser when they view the page. It may also serve as the page title when a visitor bookmarks or favorites this page, or as the page title in a search engine result. t’s common practice to append [site:name] to the end of the title to automatically include the site's name. It is best practice to keep titles between 55 – 65 characters long, including spaces.

Important: It is not recommended to change the default configuration for Page title.

    • Description
A brief and accurate summary of the page's content - ideally no longer than 160 characters. This meta tag is often used by search engines to display a preview snippet of the page in search results.
    • Abstract
A brief and clear summary of the page's content, preferably within 150 characters. While the description meta tag is commonly used by search engines to display a snippet in search results, the abstract tag was traditionally used for archiving purposes.

Note: This meta tag is no longer supported by major search engines.

    • Keywords
A comma-separated list of keywords relevant to the page.

Note: This meta tag is no longer supported by most search engines.

    Advanced Tags: important fields

    • Robots/Crawler
A crawler - also known as a robot or spider - is a program that automatically scans the Internet to discover and index web content. In the Advanced Meta Tags settings, you can configure robots to control how and whether crawlers index your website (see below for details). These settings help you manage your site's visibility in search engines.

      Most relevant robots:

      • NOINDEX
Prevents the page from being listed in search engine results on platforms like Google or Bing.
      • NOFOLLOW
Forbids the crawlers to follow any of the links on the page to discover additional content. The page itself is listed in search engine results, but links leading to other pages or websites are ignored.

Note: Not all crawlers respect these rules.

  • Open Graph protocol enhances your website’s presence on social media platforms. It allows you to control how your content is displayed when shared. The protocol tells networks like Facebook or X (formerly Twitter) which image and text to use to represent the website.

Make sure to complete at least these four required fields to ensure Open Graph works as intended:

    • Site name
A human-readable name for the site, e.g., IMDb.
    • Content type
The type of content being shared, e.g., movie.
    • Page URL
Preferred page location or URL to help eliminate duplicate content for search engines, e.g., https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0117500/.
    • Image
The URL of an image that should represent content. The image size shall be at least 200 x 200 pixels; 600 x 316 pixels is the recommended minimum size. For best results use an image of at least 1200 x 630 pixels.

Note: With the Facebook Sharing Debugger you can preview how your content will appear when shared on Facebook. It also helps  identify and fix issues with your Open Graph tags.

  • These meta tags are used to verify ownership of your website with search engines and other online services. Each platform has its own guidelines for confirming site ownership. You’ll find links to the relevant support pages beneath each tag field.

Note: Site Verification is important, for example, if you want to add your site to Google Analytics. Without confirming ownership, you won’t be able to access or manage these tool.

    Quick Guide to confirm ownership

For example, for Google Analytics, it is important to confirm your ownership for all pages of your website. To do this, proceed as follows:

    • In the main navigation, go to Configuration → Search and metadata → Metatag.
    • To get access to the GLOBAL settings, click Edit.
    • Scroll down to Site verification.
    • Fill in the string provided by each webservice to confirm ownership for all pages of your website.
